L Dot Man Intro: When the bell rings at the end of the day, there is one more lesson that you need to attend. It's a lesson in the art of lyricism and it's held by new teacher in town, L Man. Words by Danny Walker Unfortunately you can't always get what you want in life. Take L Man for instance; trying to kick-start a flailing DJ career became increasingly impossible, to the point where a career change became the only way to move forward. Deciding to swap spinning for spitting however, looks like the best decision the Man ever made. "I had sold my decks and was looking at the space they used to be in," says the 20 year-old.
From there on things have only escalated. "After we won the Ms. Dynamite/Pepsi competition we got the chance to cut a commercial track for a record company. People were going crazy for it on radio, so we did a video." Since then he has honed his lyrics, look and style and has worked hard to become one of the biggest names on the
underground. Putting in the hours in at OnTop FM (Sundays 4-6pm) with DJ Frampsta, L sums up what people get when he's on the m. i. c. "Basically I've got different styles," he states. "In the music game it's all about versatility. I don't promote guns cos there are a million things in the world to talk about. I like storytelling, using metaphors and coming with the funny side." That funny side has been recognised by many, particularly on his scene-stealing verse on Regal Player's underground hit Rude Boy Remix. In that video you'll see L sitting down and appearing as the teacher he's so often portrayed to be. But what's with the whole teaching vibe? "Not many people know this but I was adopted," he reveals. "My mum and dad didn't want me, so I've been around kids my whole life," he says, of being adopted at the age of seven. L Man hopes he can help teach kids that there are many ways of escaping the struggle. "When I look at kids who are going through troubles and down a bad path, I just wanna show them that you can have a bad upbringing but there is a light at the end of the tunnel. Just keep focussed."
There's been a number of people that have guided L and he's keen to point out he has love for them all. "I can't lie, people have helped me out a lot. I respect Narstie for what he has done for me, bringing me in the hood and everything," he says, "I can go in areas certain white guys are shook to go in and get respected. I got Semtex, Cameo and Vash (Faith SFX's manager) helping me out and looking after man on road." His current mixtape Facts of Life and reload-worthy niceness L Dot Man are big, but with L Dot you can be sure there's loads more to look out for. "J Sweet, Slash, Mr Fusion, J Flows and loads of others have been hooking man up with beats and people are going crazy over my tunes," he smiles. "I've been waiting years to get on a platform; I can see it now and I just wanna go over there and get on it!" L Man's Final Thought "Me and N Double A are all a family. We have a long way to go so me and Narstie are gonna try and bring the rest through; watch out for our albums."
